Ah, back to school bliss—the anticipation of new things brings a smell of excitement to the air. Shopping for new clothes, newly sharpened pencils and fresh white binder paper gets families welcoming the rhythms and routines of the new school year over the frolic and freedom of the summer. It’s basically a timezone change to our systems without getting on a plane. Our kids are a little groggy, but filled with joy to see old friends, meet new teachers and face the challenges of a new grade, new material that ups the concentration demands for our children and for ourselves.
We do all we can to provide structure and support so that our children are thriving, optimizing, and feeling more confident in their new environment. We create morning and bedtime routines. We do our best to plan healthy, nutritious meals and interject fun activities. We pursue sports, extra-curricular activities, and social gatherings, so it doesn’t feel like joy is limited just to the summer months.
September and October roll in and we begin to feel a little worn out, a little out of control. The children are starting to sniffle, slow down and get a little fever. They are not springing out of bed. The clothes are not new anymore. The attention and concentration starts to wane. The back to school blues start to set in. It’s only October, and there seems like there is no end in sight! There is hope!
